Sociological imagination allows a person to question customs or habits that seem natural to him. Mills argued that each of us needs to have this thing, called a sociological imagination. Having this would allow us to see how history and bigger events in society impact our personal lives, and the lives of others. Being able to see how, broader macro level structures and events shape lives, made sense for Mills. Sociologists study how groups of people behave, known as collective behavior, which includes things from rumors and the creation of urban legends to mobs, panics, riots, protests, and movements for social change. Often this type of behavior is unplanned and leaderless, emerging in response to a situation in real time. Sociology is the scientific study of social structure and social interaction, and the factors making for change in each.
